Richard Wygant Obituary

Richard Howe Wygant, age 83, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2026, in Ramona, California, after a period of declining health related to strokes. He was born on May 6, 1942, in Brooklyn, New York, to Marjorie Howe Wygant and Henry Solet Wygant Jr., of Maryland.
Richard attended Kemper Military School in Missouri and later the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy, deploying aboard the USS Tingey in the South Pacific—an experience that shaped his lifelong sense of duty, discipline, and commitment to service.
After his military years, Richard built a life rooted in family, hard work, and community. He was known for his confident leadership, steady nature, and genuine kindness. Early in his career, he worked as an Assistant Engineer for Caltrans and later for the City of San Marcos before becoming Public Works Director, a position he held for 22 years until his retirement in 1999. During his time with Caltrans, Richard was involved in several important projects, including work on the well-known Lilac Road “Rainbow Bridge” over Interstate 15.
Richard believed deeply in giving back, and nowhere was that more evident than in his remarkable volunteer service with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Senior Volunteer Patrol. From 2009 to 2025, he served his community with pride, compassion, and reliability, dedicating his time at Station 200 in Ramona and earning his 4,000-hour service pin.
A longtime member of the First Congregational Church of Ramona, Richard found fellowship and purpose among friends who shared his values. He also enjoyed the camaraderie of the Meyers Manx Club and loved spending time sailing, off-roading, and camping with friends and family—embracing adventure and the beauty of the outdoors.
Above all, Richard treasured his family. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Wendy Wygant; his children and their spouses, Michael & Tina Wygant, Anne & Daniel Lopez, Robert & Kristin Gomez, and William & Stephanie Wygant; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Marjorie Wygant-Avery of Texas. Richard was preceded in death by his brother, William Wygant of California. His love, guidance, and gentle humor will live on in each of them.

Richard will be remembered as a man of integrity, service, and warmth—a steady presence who made the world a little better simply by being in it. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
Services to celebrate his life will be announced by the family.
